Kumari. Lavanya Sundararaman hails from a rich classical music background. It is indeed divine blessing that she had the good fortune of learning from the doyen of music Gana Saraswathi Smt. D K Pattammal, her great grandmother, even when she was a toddler. She was groomed into a talented vocalist by her grandmother Smt. Lalitha Sivakumar, mother Smt. Gayathri Sundararaman and aunt Dr. Nithyasree Mahadevan.

Her mother's maternal grandfather is the Mridangam Maestro Sri. Palghat T S Mani Iyer and paternal grandmother is Gana Saraswathi Smt. D K Pattammal.

Apart from winning several awards and prizes, she was honoured with the titles of "Amudha Gana Vani", "Tamizhisai Kuyil", "Ezhisai Ilavarasi" in appreciation of her mellifluous voice and contribution towards the field of music. The Government of India honoured her with the prestigious "Bhagidhari" award recognising her as the torch bearer of the DKP Tradition.
